Yani Nicopoulos and Dale Jones were due to return from their trip on Monday, but neither have heard from them since June 13.
The Virginia Beach couple who had sailed to Portugal earlier this month are now missing having failed to return home on Monday.
In a news release Tuesday, the US Coast Guard said that Jani Nicopoulos and Dale Jones, 65, left Hampton, Virginia, on June 8 for the Azores, Portugal. They were supposed to be back Monday but didn't, prompting a Coast Guard search.
The last person to hear from the couple was Jones' daughter, who on June 13 received a message from Nicopoulos and Jones telling her they had lousy weather damaging their sailboat and were planning to head back and head back to Hampton. They had traveled about 460 miles from town when they spoke to Jones' daughter.
Princess Jones later notified the Coast Guard's Fifth District Command Center on June 17, saying she had "no heard from her mother since she left and is concerned about her well-being." According to the Coast Guard, Jones' daughter said she was expected to return on Monday.
According to the report, Elizabeth City was looking for Jones and Nicopoulos after two Hercules HC-130 flights disappeared via Coast Guard Air Station. The sailors in the vicinity also received an emergency call information broadcast from the Fifth District Coast Guard Command Center.
"In a probproblem lem like this, where there are so much unknowns, our coordinated efforts must form a broad and conscious network," said Coast Guard Chief Brian Gainey.
"We monitor cell phone and radio signals as we work with our colleagues in Bermuda to determine our crew's most innovative search areas. It is a lot of gumshoe work, but it's about finding these two people and bringing them home to their families.
