A wave of youthful insurgents is reshaping the trajectory of an overlooked conflict.


On a scorching day surpassing 40 degrees Celsius, two towering loudspeakers, carried by men of equal stature, are hoisted to a rocky hilltop. Below, some 800 meters away in the town of Hpasang, sprawls a vast Myanmar army base.



Amidst the oppressive heat, more young fighters of the resistance trudge upward, shouldering a bulky battery pack and amplifier mounted on bamboo poles.

Leading the ascent is Nay Myo Zin, a former army captain turned defector after 12 years of military service.


With his dark green camouflage jacket casually draped over one shoulder, Nay Myo Zin exudes the aura of a performer poised for the spotlight. His mission: to persuade the soldiers stationed below, loyal to Myanmar's ruling military, to defect and join the resistance.


In this remote jungle terrain deep within Karenni state in eastern Myanmar, two opposing forces confront each other in a struggle that has endured for decades. Yet, recent gains by the resistance suggest that this time.
