AI in Education: Hull College Embraces Technology for Learning and Career Preparation

Hull College is leading the way in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education, transforming the learning experience for its students. The college is embracing AI in innovative ways, from aiding teachers in creating personalized lesson plans to translating lessons into multiple languages in real time. The institution is even hosting a conference at its Queens Gardens campus to explore how AI is "shaping the future of teaching, learning, and career preparation."

For mature student Sharron Knight, who is retraining to become a police call handler, AI has proven to be less intimidating than she first thought. She attended a seminar on AI basics and shared that the technology had "opened a whole new wardrobe of things you can do and can't do." Reflecting on her initial fears, she said, "It's not as scary, definitely not as scary, as I anticipated it to be in the beginning."

AI is also helping students like Albara Tahir, who speaks Sudanese as his first language, improve their English skills. Albara expressed that the use of AI in learning has made communication much easier: "It's good to speak to people... but now it's good."

Hull College's principal, Debra Gray, sees AI as a tool that can "super-power" teachers, helping them and their students achieve more efficiently. She likened AI's role in education to "riding a bike," making learning faster without changing the fundamental teacher-student dynamic.

Across the UK, other educational institutions are also embracing AI. However, as the technology rapidly develops, schools and universities are balancing its educational potential with the need to ensure academic integrity, discouraging its misuse in cheating. There is a growing focus on helping students become AI literate while exploring its applications to enhance teaching, learning, and career outcomes.

In parallel with these developments, the UK government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, has announced plans to use AI to drive economic growth and improve public services. AI is already being used in UK hospitals to speed up cancer diagnoses, and it is set to play a significant role in the future of public service delivery.
