A guitar once used by John Lennon has fetched the highest price ever paid for a Beatles instrument at auction.
The Framus 12-string Hootenanny acoustic guitar, which had been thought lost for over half a century until it was discovered in an attic, sold for $2.9 million (£2.3 million) through a telephone bid at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.
Lennon famously played the guitar in the 1965 film Help! during the performance of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," and it was also featured on recordings for the album of the same name.
The auction was conducted by Julien's Auctions, a renowned rock 'n' roll memorabilia auction house that has previously set world records with the sale of Beatles items.
Among these were another of Lennon's acoustic guitars, which sold for $2.4 million (£1.9 million), and Ringo Starr's Ludwig drum kit, which fetched $2.2 million (£1.7 million).
David Goodman, CEO of Julien's Auctions, hailed the Framus guitar as the most significant Beatles instrument ever offered for sale.
He emphasized its importance not only as a piece of music history but also as a symbol of John Lennon's enduring legacy, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the sale as a testament to the timeless appeal and reverence of The Beatles' music and Lennon himself.
