There's nothing like going back to where it all started.
Underwood's Season 4 winners serve as guest mentors for the top five players in Sunday's event.
On Sunday's American Idol, 39-year-old Carrie Underwood guided the top five contestants, who performed two songs of their choice to make it into the top three. However, one contestant in particular raised nostalgia for the country music star.
During the show, contestants choose a song from Underwood's discography after receiving some suggestions from former contestants and season 4 winners and then play their selected music.
However, after Underwood's encounter with racer Noah Thompson, he held back his tears and reminisced about his time at the racing event.
Thompson, who tested positive for COVID-19 last week, met Underwood via video chat. Thompson said he plans to sing his song "So Small" in honor of the people who worked so hard for him: his family back home. And after Underwood met him, he saw a lot of himself in her.
"I feel like this show is made for people like me, for people like Noah, who can't dream much but know they want to do something," the Before He Cheats singer said during a solo interview.
"So that's a beautiful thing," he said, wiping the tears from his eyes. "I mean, I thought back, and it was a decision that changed my whole life - I didn't know where I would be. And seeing athletes get every opportunity they wanted was magical."
After the show, during group interviews with various publications, Thompson said he "couldn't believe" her reaction after her private extraction.
"We just connected in that way - from a small town, and we wanted to make something of ourselves, and that's hard. To say that, knowing that he feels something for me - it's incredible."
"I think if someone like Carrie Underwood can treat me like that - that's great."
