Can a company that started advising and selling carbon reduction solutions to other companies establish itself as a well-known consumer brand? Mark Sait, the founder of SaveMoneyCutCarbon, wants to answer this question.
Founded as a business in 2012, Sait now sells energy-efficient products directly to consumers. Still, Sait has ambitious plans to expand this part of the business and create an instantly recognizable brand. "We want to be Deliveroo for this market," he said. When we spoke last month, the company wanted to raise £28m to fund its growth.
But are energy-efficient products made of branded goods?
Well, the economic and geopolitical backdrop of 2022 certainly draws the attention of British consumers to the need to reduce CO2. Speaking to a committee of lawmakers earlier this week, Jonathan Brierley, head of energy and gas regulator Ofgem, said the price cap on consumer energy bills would rise by more than £800 to £2,800 in October due to a tenfold spike in fuel prices. This will follow the recent £600 increase in the cap to £1,900 last month. While this move - which effectively limits taxes - reflects the price of oil and gas on world markets, it will leave many people unable to afford heating and other necessities.
In this case, reducing CO2 will no longer only serve to mitigate global climate catastrophes but also to lower bills perhaps a necessity to get through the winter months.
Capture imagination
Founded in 2012, SaveMoneyCutCarbon initially took a niche to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, and as Sait explains, the first port of call was the hospitality industry. "They have huge energy costs," he said.
