Eight people died when two suspected smuggling boats capsized off the coast of San Diego, and crews searched for seven other victims on Sunday, authorities said.
San Diego Fire-Rescue said responders at Blacks Beach pulled eight bodies from the water Saturday night, but thick fog complicated the search overnight. Firefighters and Coast Guard vessels searched the area early Sunday morning.
Daniel Eddy, deputy chief of operations for the San Diego Fire Department, said there was a long debris field at Black's Beach. Black's Beach is jointly owned by the City of San Diego and the State. This sandy beach is also known as Torrey Pines City Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach.
Coast Guard Corporal Eddie Berrios confirmed eight people were dead and crews were searching for at least seven others. He didn't know what kind of boats they were, but he said pangas often docked there.
