A deadly shooting and arson attack occurred at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (LDS) meetinghouse in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on a Sunday morning, leaving at least four people dead and eight others wounded before the gunman was fatally shot by police. The FBI has classified the incident as an "act of targeted violence" and is leading the ongoing investigation to determine the motive.
The attack unfolded around 10:25 a.m. while hundreds of worshippers were inside the church. The assailant, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of nearby Burton, Michigan, crashed a silver pickup truck, which was reportedly fixed with two American flags, through the front of the church building. He then emerged and began firing an assault rifle at congregants and deliberately set the building ablaze, likely using an accelerant such as gasoline. Police officers, arriving within thirty seconds of the 911 call, pursued the suspect and engaged him in gunfire, killing him in the parking lot approximately eight minutes after the attack began.
The devastating combination of gunfire and fire resulted in multiple casualties. Authorities confirmed at least four victims died in the attack, with two killed by gunfire and two more bodies found in the charred remains of the building, which was nearly destroyed. Eight other people, ranging in age from six to seventy eight, were hospitalized with either gunshot wounds or injuries from smoke inhalation. Authorities confirmed that all churchgoers who were present have since been accounted for. During the chaos, several heroic church members, including some who were employees at a nearby hospital, risked their lives to pull others out of the burning structure.
The suspect, Thomas Jacob Sanford, was a former US Marine who served from 2004 to 2008, including a seven month deployment to Iraq. Investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are conducting a large scale probe, examining his residence, mobile phone records, and background as they search for a motive. The ATF has also recovered and is assessing suspected explosive devices found in the suspect's truck. While the official motive remains unknown, one local report stated that Sanford had previously expressed anti LDS sentiments, allegedly calling the religion "the antichrist" in a conversation a week before the attack. Officials are urging the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues.
