James Bay gives fans a glimpse into Life with his partner Lucy Smith in the 'One Life' music video

"It called to the point where I did not want to pretend Lucy wasn't around anymore," Bay told news about her decision to write about her relationship.

Bay's music video for her sweet new song "One Life," which chronicles a couple's love journey to get pregnant and raise a baby together, was released on Thursday. However, the song itself was inspired by Bay's relationship, which has remained mainly in the spotlight so far.

"Lucy and I have been together since we were kids growing up in the same hometown," Bay, 31, told news about his girlfriend Lucy Smith, with whom he shares his 20-month-old daughter Ada Violet. "He was a big part of my journey. We knew each other before I started performing as a solo artist." But it also got to the point where I didn't want to pretend Lucy wasn't around anymore. So this song celebrates our journey so far, and I find it the perfect way to express it.

The Move Together hitmaker also said that she got a good reaction from Lucy when she showed her the song and video - and she appreciates her opinion.

"Lucy is one of my biggest judges and my best critic. I need it from him, and I don't want it any other way," he said. "It wouldn't work if he just said he liked everything I wrote. In this case, I feel like when I write a song, I have something he wants to hear again. One Life is one of those songs, and I'm so proud to say it!"
