year to organizations that help homeless families as part of his Day One initiative.
According to Securities and Exchange Filings verified by Forbes, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos donated another $100 million this week, but it's not clear which nonprofit he is presenting.
According to SEC documents Tuesday, Bezos sold 47,727 Amazon shares to an unnamed nonprofit for $118 million based on the share price at the end of the day. Bezos does much of his philanthropy through the gift of Amazon stock, which nonprofit recipients can sell without paying capital gains tax. According to SEC documents, since this year, Bezos has donated 84,030 Amazon shares worth $233 million to an unnamed charity.
A spokesman for Bezos did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes about the donation. Bezos did not have to disclose which nonprofit received the shares, although he was willing to announce his large donation after the share transfer publicly.
Bezos has made small donations of $100 million in recent years while increasing his philanthropy. In 2021 alone, he donated $100 million to former President Barack Obama's Foundation and World Central Kitchen chef Jose Andres and nonprofit founder Van Jones to donate to charities of their choosing. And he pledged $200 million to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum last July, just days before he flew into space on his Blue Origin rocket. Bezos also donates $100 million a year to organizations that help homeless families as part of his Day One initiative.
One possibility is that shares distributed this year will be donated to environmental nonprofits as part of the Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion initiative by Amazon's founders to fight climate change. So far, the fund has committed $1.4 billion since it started in 2020.
According to Forbes estimates, Bezos has given away $2.4 billion in his lifetime, while Scott has given five times as much - $12.5 billion. However, it still has an estimated net worth of $34.3 billion. Bezos, the world's third-richest person as of Friday afternoon, is worth $141.6 billion.
