Julia Garner has been chosen to play Madonna in a biopic about the singer.

"The Madonna project is in active development. Also, Julia Garner chooses to play Madonna in her biopic," said a source close to the project.

According to Variety, Star discoverer Anna has been offered the lead role in the upcoming biopic. The publication reports that Garner, 28, was voted the favorite to play the music icon by more than a dozen other actresses.

The 63-year-old Grammy winner is also a co-writer, producer, and director for Universal Pictures. Madonna announced in October last year - following the premiere of her documentary concert Madame X at Paramount + - that she was almost done writing the script.

"I am grateful for Madame's success in completing my script and for the incredible support of my children!" The mother-of-six signed a series of selfies on Instagram showing her sitting in front of her script. Garner may join Uncut Gems actress Julia Fox, who reportedly talks to play Papa Don't Preach singer's longtime boyfriend, Debbie Mazar.

Mazar opened up about her relationship with Madonna in May, telling PEOPLE that she was "inspired" by the Queen of Pop.

"This is a very personal relationship," Mazar said. "People always ask me about Madonna. She is a great friend. She is a perfect mother and a good person."
