Julie Andrews joins 'Potential Princess Diaries 3': 'Depends on the story.'

Andrews plays the grandmother of Hathaway's character.

The Princess Diaries premiered in 2001 and inspired the 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

The 86-year-old actress unveiled a potential third film in the Princess Diaries series while decorating the red carpet before accepting the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, on Thursday night.

When asked about the possibility of reuniting with Anne Hathaway for a sequel, Andrews told Entertainment Tonight: Old granny about that, I don't know.

"It depends on the story and whether they can come up with something extraordinary," continued the star. "But if not, there will be other things." The Princess Diaries glorified 18-year-old Hathaway, now 39, after debuting in 2001 and inspiring its sequel, Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement from 2004.

Apart from Hathaway and Andrews, this film stars Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, Sandra O, and Larry Miller. Hathaway celebrated the iconic two-decade royal saga with an Instagram post last year and by sharing a photo gallery from the film.

The incredible behind-the-scenes shot shows Hathaway posing with Andrews and director Gary Marshall, with the two women smiling while holding cordage. "Miracles do happen... Happy 20th birthday to #theprincessdiaries, aka the movie that starts a thousand nights," Hathaway wrote in her nostalgic post. Of course, Hathaway always knew that the story of her heroine, Mia Thermopolis, to Genoese royalty, based on the book series by Meg Cabot, would be a hit.

As she told news in January 2019, "When I received the script, it was just this feeling... I touched it, and it was like electricity."

And starring Andrews was a "dream come true" for the actress, who would win an Oscar for her role as Fantina in 2012's The Doomsday.

"To be successful and be on set every day, I have to hug Julie Andrews every day," Hathaway said.
