Key World Leaders Converge at Sharm El Sheikh to Mobilize Support for the Ceasefire and Peace Plan Implementation

The Future Role of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza Following Israel's Rejection of its Involvement

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is attending the international peace summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, October 13, 2025. The summit, co chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, aims to finalize the framework of a peace agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip that began in 2023. This meeting follows a recent US brokered ceasefire between Israel and the militant group Hamas, which includes a prisoner and hostage exchange.

The primary goal of the "Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit" is to cement the ceasefire and gather international backing for the next steps in the peace plan, which include discussing the future governance and post war reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, as well as providing extensive humanitarian assistance. The presence of President Abbas is significant, as the internationally backed Palestinian Authority (PA) is considered a key potential actor in the future administration of Gaza, despite Israel's current government rejecting any PA role.

Leaders and representatives from over 20 countries and several international organizations are attending the high level diplomatic meeting, demonstrating a broad push for a lasting resolution to the conflict. Notable attendees include the UN Secretary General, the European Council President, and leaders from countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey, and Jordan. Neither Israel nor Hamas were invited to participate directly in the summit, which is instead focused on the international community, particularly the four ceasefire guarantors (US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey), rallying support for the broader peace framework.

The summit comes at a crucial time as the first phase of the ceasefire deal is being implemented, which involves the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, along with an increase in humanitarian aid into Gaza. The discussions in Sharm El Sheikh are expected to focus on the more challenging later phases of the peace plan, including the disarmament of Hamas and the specifics of a new governing body in the territory. While a comprehensive, lasting solution remains complex, the summit represents a major diplomatic effort to transition the region from a two year conflict to a path of security and stability.
