Chris Kendall Walks from York Minster to the Lake District, Raising Over £2,000 for Mind

Chris Kendall, 33, has successfully completed an impressive 111-mile (178km) endurance walk from York Minster to the Lake District, all in support of the mental health charity Mind. After setting off from his home city of York, Kendall arrived in Keswick three days later, marking the end of a physically demanding journey driven by his personal experiences with depression and anxiety.

A Journey of Personal Triumph and Charity

Inspired by his own battles with mental health, Kendall has raised over £2,000 for Mind, a charity dedicated to providing support for mental health issues. Reflecting on his achievement, Kendall expressed the satisfaction of contributing a significant amount to a cause he is passionate about. "It's a nice feeling as I know I am going to give a good amount of money to help other people that need the support," he said.

The challenge was not without its difficulties. Kendall began his trek at 2am and was plagued by painful shin splints, which forced him to walk on his tiptoes. Despite the physical strain, he was overwhelmed with relief and emotion upon reaching the finish line. "I was really emotional, the floodgates opened," he recounted.

Support from Family and a Loyal Companion

Throughout his journey, Kendall received invaluable support from his father, who met him every 10 miles in his campervan with tea and snacks. Additionally, Kendall's dog, Roux, accompanied him for parts of the walk, providing both companionship and motivation.

Kendall, who was diagnosed with mental health issues two years ago, shared that he is still learning to open up to friends and family. "Some days still aren't great as you do bottle stuff up, but I am learning to open up to friends and family," he said. His love for the Lake District, which began when his boss took him walking in the fells, provided a therapeutic escape during challenging times. "The Lakes just relaxed me," he added. "The walk has been a light at the end of the tunnel after a difficult time."

Encouraging Others to Speak Out

Kendall's journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of speaking out about mental health struggles. "If you don't talk you hold it up and it gets worse and worse," he emphasized. His story aims to inspire others to seek support and share their experiences.
