New Twitter files reveal a left-wing think tank mistakenly fabricated a story about "Russian interference"

The latest Twitter files have revealed that a leftist think tank called Hamilton 68, which claimed to be monitoring Russian activities online, was responsible for thousands of false stories about Russia's influence in US politics. Founded by former FBI agent Clint Watts, the think tank was part of the Alliance to Secure Democracy, an organization formed in 2017 shortly after the Trump presidency. The group's advisory board included prominent figures such as John Podesta, Michael Morell, Michael McFaul and Bill Kristol, according to a New York Post report.

The Twitter files revealed that Twitter executives often internally denied Hamilton 68's claims about widespread Russian interference on social media.Apparently, internal audits by Twitter revealed that the accounts reported by the think tank were not Russian bots. In essence, the think tank falsely claimed that there had been widespread and deep Russian penetration of American social media. Internal audits by Twitter repeatedly showed the accounts reported by Hamilton 68 were not Russian bots, according to the latest Twitter files. Matt Taibbi, who released the files, claimed that the Hamilton 68 dashboard was a scam and that it collects mostly genuine, mostly American accounts, describing their organic conversations as Russian intrigue.

The ones on TwitterTrust and Safety Director Yoel Roth wanted to publicly oppose Hamilton 68 but was warned not to do so by Emily Horne, Global Policy Communications Director.

Was the story of Russian interference in the US election inaccurate?

The group's claims were used in many news articles during the Trump years to undermine the Trump presidency and promote a narrative suggesting that Trump is not the rightful President of the US because Russia is in the meddled in elections. Twitter executives have been advised to exercise caution in their public response to the think tank's bogus claims, and the company has also appeared to have received calls from the US government to find evidence of Russian influence. Additionally,

Twitter executives worked closely with the FBI and other intelligence agencies in the run-up to the release of reports on Hunter Biden, and were warned of possible foreign hacking operations involving the president's son. When the Russia controversy took place, Trump and his supporters labeled it a "Russia hoax".The disclosures in the Twitter files are important because they show that the people at Twitter themselves knew that the alleged "Russian interference" was not actually "Russian interference".
