Breaking the Stigma: Oxford United's 'Can We Talk?' Campaign Promotes Mental Health Support
In a powerful move to break the stigma surrounding mental health in sports, Oxford United's head coach, Des Buckingham, has emphasized that mental health struggles should not be seen as a weakness. Buckingham's comments came during a mental health workshop attended by over 200 people, organized by the football club as part of its "Can We Talk?" campaign. The event aimed to raise awareness about mental health issues, particularly among men, and encourage individuals to seek support when needed.
Des Buckingham's Stand on Mental Health
Des Buckingham, who has been a strong advocate for mental health awareness, reinforced the importance of creating an environment where players and individuals feel safe to open up. During the workshop, Buckingham shared his perspective on the changing attitudes towards mental health in football, a sport traditionally known for its tough, no-nonsense culture. He emphasized that it's crucial for people to feel comfortable seeking help when they need it and that mental health issues should never be viewed as a weakness.
"Football, traditionally, has always been very much about 'this is how you do what you do,' and men don't talk about that sort of stuff," said Buckingham. He highlighted that, much like society, football changing rooms need to be spaces where people can be themselves, knowing they have support available without fear of judgment.
The 'Can We Talk?' Campaign
The workshop, held at the Kassam Stadium, was part of Oxford United's "Can We Talk?" initiative, created in partnership with Oxfordshire Mind and the Joey Beauchamp Foundation. The campaign aims to provide education and raise awareness about mental health while offering local support resources. During the event, participants were encouraged to engage in conversations about mental well-being and connect with others who understand the challenges.
Buckingham's involvement in the campaign, including his decision to wear a jumper that promoted men's mental health awareness during a game against Burnley, was widely praised earlier in the season. His actions reflect the growing commitment within sports to tackle mental health head-on, providing a platform for open discussions on what was once considered a taboo subject.
Support from Oxfordshire Mind and the Joey Beauchamp Foundation
The event also welcomed representatives from the Joey Beauchamp Foundation, which was founded in memory of the football club's legendary player, Joey Beauchamp. Beauchamp tragically took his own life at the age of 50 in 2022, and his family, including his brother Luke, established the foundation to support mental health initiatives in the local community.
Luke Beauchamp, a trustee of the foundation, shared that the foundation's mission is to honor Joey's legacy while providing much-needed mental health resources to the community. "Every penny raised all goes into the local community on our mental health projects," Beauchamp said.
In addition, Jess Wilshire, the CEO of Oxfordshire Mind, spoke on the importance of timely mental health support. She emphasized the distress that can come from untreated mental health issues, particularly among young people. "With the right support at the right time, young people can and do improve their mental health and go on to thrive," she added.
The Mental Health Crisis Among Young People
The event also highlighted the significant mental health challenges facing young people in the Oxfordshire area, with reports indicating some are waiting up to five years for mental health support on the NHS. This delay can be devastating for individuals, particularly during crucial developmental years, making initiatives like Oxford United's "Can We Talk?" campaign even more vital.
By providing a space for open dialogue, the event allowed individuals to not only learn about available local resources but also share their own experiences and connect with others who understand the struggles they face.
Des Buckingham and Oxford United's commitment to promoting mental health awareness through their "Can We Talk?" campaign is a positive step toward breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health in football and beyond. As Buckingham stated, "If we can play our part as a football club to raise awareness of what support there is, then we have to do that." By fostering an environment of openness, support, and understanding, the club is helping to pave the way for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to mental health in the world of sports.
