The top two candidates in the Pennsylvania Republican Senate primaries said they did not expect a winner to be announced on election night.

"So we're not getting results tonight," said Dr. Mehmet Oz, the famous doctor approved to race by former President Donald Trump.

"Relax," Oz told supporters at his election monitoring party. "When all the votes are counted, I believe we will win."

Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund executive, and another major contender, told his supporters that the thousands of ballots submitted had not been counted.

"Unfortunately, we won't have a solution tonight. But we can see a way forward. We can see a win in front of us, all thanks to you," McCormick said.

Several hundred votes separated the two candidates shortly after midnight.

The Pennsylvania State Department confirmed the delay in results, attributing the delay that state law does not allow "primary elections" to be held before Election Day. That means counties will not be able to count ballots by mail until Tuesday morning, Acting Foreign Minister Lee Chapman said in a statement.

He noted that some 900,000 ballot applications had been sent for the primaries and said he expected most of the ballots to be counted "within a few days."

The Democratic Party's picture of the primaries is much clearer: NBC News estimates Lt. John Fetterman's government of Pennsylvania will win the Senate Democratic primaries.

Fetterman, who newly suffered a stroke that took him out of the election campaign, is considered a big favorite among Democrats. He and the Republican nominee ultimately face a general election that could play a pivotal role in where the party controls the US Senate after the midterm elections.

The battle lines for the November Pennsylvania gubernatorial election were also drawn Tuesday night, with news predicting that Republican Senator Doug Mastriano will face Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro.

Mastriano, who made the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, was backed by Trump just three days before the primaries. Shapiro is running for the Democratic nomination to replace incumbent Democratic Governor Tom Wolfe, who has a limited mandate to run again.
