Roblox Announces New Safety Features for Under-13s to Address Concerns Over Harmful Content

Roblox Implements Age-Based Restrictions and New Guidelines to Ensure a Safer Experience for Young Users

In response to ongoing concerns about safety for younger users, Roblox is introducing new safety features aimed specifically at children under the age of 13. This comes after criticism regarding the platform's ability to protect its younger players from harmful and inappropriate content. The platform, which boasts approximately 70 million daily users worldwide, has become a popular space for children to play, create games, and interact with others. However, it has faced significant backlash from parents and safety regulators over issues with inappropriate content and user interactions.

New Game Suitability Guidelines
Starting from December 3, 2024, game creators on Roblox will be required to specify whether their games are suitable for players under the age of 13. Any game that does not meet these criteria will be automatically blocked for players aged 12 and under. This move is aimed at ensuring that younger users are not exposed to content that could be considered harmful or inappropriate for their age group.

Restrictions on Social Hangouts and 2D User Creation
In addition to the game suitability guidelines, Roblox will also implement restrictions on certain features that have raised concerns. Beginning November 18, under-13s will be prohibited from accessing "social hangouts," which are online spaces designed for players to communicate with each other via text and voice. These areas are meant to foster social interactions, but their focus on real-life communication rather than role-playing games has raised concerns about online safety.

Another significant change will be the restriction on under-13s using "free-form 2D user creation." This feature, which allows users to create and share 2D drawings and text-based content, has been a source of concern due to the potential for offensive or inappropriate content to be created and shared without adequate moderation.

Addressing Safety Concerns
Roblox has faced multiple incidents where younger users were exposed to inappropriate content or approached by strangers with harmful intentions. One such instance was reported in May 2024, where a young player was asked for explicit images. This led to increased scrutiny from regulators like Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, which has urged tech companies to implement stricter protections for children online.

Despite the introduction of these new features, Roblox has indicated that it will not begin enforcing these new rules until 2025. The company assures users that it has already implemented over 30 safety improvements this year alone and is committed to continuing to strengthen its safety systems and policies.

These changes reflect Roblox's ongoing efforts to create a safer environment for its younger audience. By tightening controls around content and communication features, the company hopes to address some of the longstanding concerns about its platform. However, with these changes coming into effect soon, Roblox is asking for cooperation from developers and players to ensure the platform remains a safe and enjoyable place for all users, especially those under the age of 13.
