New Mexico lawmaker says he worries that he might vote for Supreme Court presidential nominee Joe Biden during rehabilitation. New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Luhan said his recovery from the stroke in January that nearly killed him was "remarkable."
"I feel like I'm coming back stronger," Luhan, 49, told The New York Times in an article published Thursday, adding a joke about losing weight during recovery. "I fit my clothes better."
On January 27th, Luhan woke up and immediately realized something was wrong. "As soon as I wake up, I was dizzy," he said.
He went back to bed for a while, but his dizziness had not subsided when he woke up. His chief of staff urged him to call his doctor, who directed Luhan to go to the emergency room.
But her dizziness was so severe that she couldn't walk. After saying he was crawling on the ground, his sister Jackie, who lives nearby, came to help him reach Christ St. Regional Hospital. Vincent in Santa Fe. "I need your strength," he told Jackie, according to the Times story. He found a broom to use as a support.
"He could see the fear in their eyes," said Luhan. "I still remember that."
Luhan already has a scar on the back of his head from which a one-dollar silver-dollar piece of skull was taken, the Times reported. Returning to work meant that Luhan needed rehabilitation, and he worked with a physical therapist who trained him in balance and mobility.
Although she said she was frustrated at times during therapy, she recovered relatively quickly. Luhan still felt a tingling sensation in his right arm, but he spoke quickly and fluently according to the Times.
