Singapore's unique 'Village' that empowers people with disabilities to embrace innovation

A supermarket with sliding doors and wider aisles, shopping trolleys that can be pushed by wheelchairs, Braille on bathroom doors and tactile floor indicators are some of the features of a unique 'village' here in Singapore that uses innovation to support people with disabilities.

The first community space, dubbed the "Enabling Village" or "EV," is an accessible, inclusive, and sensory-friendly space dedicated to the integration of people with disabilities into society. Renters include social businesses that educate and rent to people with disabilities, and these businesses also showcase the skills of people with disabilities when visitors shop or dine in electric vehicles. Social enterprises, along with inclusive events and community services like the inclusive gym, provide opportunities for people with disabilities to collaborate with people without disabilities while bringing dignity to work for people with disabilities," said Ku Geok Boon, Chief Former Officer Executive, Activate SG She said PTI.

"We hope that through our collective efforts, more people with disabilities will lead better and more meaningful lives, and that together we can bring greater hope and opportunity to all and build a more inclusive society," he added. Boon explained that the village is also home to several training and employment fairs and CV clinics for people with disabilities, which bring together experienced employers, training providers and business people in a variety of sectors to offer jobs, training workshops on job interview tips and individual resume writing consultations.

The space attracts visitors from different countries interested in exploring a similar setup or implementing take-out for inclusive spaces." Enabling Village receives many visitors, both local and international, and we want to inspire and show everyone how a society can be more inclusive towards people with disabilities with universal design, assistive technology and an inclusive culture.

" The city has enabled different sectors and community partners to provide innovative services that support inclusion and fill gaps in the disability landscape.Beyond the Enabling Village, these prototypes have catalyzed other disability inclusion efforts in areas such as early childhood education, sport and wellness, and inclusive training and employment," he said. Enabling Village also successfully launched many early prototypes of inclusive services, the first inclusive gym and pre-school in Singapore."

These prototypes have catalyzed other disability inclusion efforts beyond electric vehicles. A design thinking sprint of focus group discussions with people with disabilities and the community was also conducted during the planning phase to gather input, which was then adapted into the architect's universal design characteristics and strategy development for the design of places," he said .
