Pope Francis has shown "significant improvement" after intravenous antibiotics for bronchitis and could be released from the hospital in the coming days, according to the Vatican and its doctors.
The 86-year-old pope, who had part of a lung removed as a young man, ate breakfast, read newspapers, rested and worked in his sickroom at Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Thursday .
Another update from doctors revealed that Francesco was diagnosed with bronchitis after being admitted to Gemella on Wednesday. The infection "required antibiotic therapy in the form of an infusion, which brought the expected results with a marked improvement in his condition," the statement said.
"According to the procedure envisaged, the Holy Father could be released in the next few days," he concluded.
Franciszek was hospitalized in the last few days after having breathing problems.
