Victims of Bondi Beach Terror Attack Revealed: Heartbreaking Loss for Families and Community

Sydney, Australia Authorities have begun naming victims of the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, a terror attack that struck a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday, leaving at least 15 people dead and more than 40 injured. Among the confirmed fatalities are a 10-year-old girl named Matilda, multiple rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and respected members of the local community.

The youngest victim, Matilda, was described by family members as "a happy kid" whose light and joy touched those around her. She was attending the Hanukkah celebration with her family when the shooting unfolded. Loved ones have since expressed deep sorrow, worrying for the well-being of her younger sister and relatives still grieving the loss.

Among the other victims was Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, an assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi and head of the Chabad mission in the area. Schlanger, a devoted community leader and father of five, was murdered while helping organise the "Chanukah by the Sea" event. His cousin, Rabbi Zalman Lewis, shared tributes online, calling him a man dedicated to spreading light, compassion, and faith.

Also killed were Holocaust survivors who had survived unimaginable horrors only to lose their lives in this modern tragedy. These elders had been celebrating with family and friends when the gunmen opened fire. Another victim, Reuven Morrison, was remembered for his philanthropy and community involvement, and Yaakov Levitan, part of the Sydney Beth Din, was also listed among the dead. A French national, Dan Elkayam, and other community members were also named as victims.

The attack occurred during a peaceful holiday celebration at Bondi Beach, near Archer Park, where hundreds had gathered for festivities. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and horror as two gunmen armed with rifles opened fire from a nearby elevated bridge. Police engaged the attackers, killing one of the gunmen and hospitalising the other.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an act of terror and a "dark moment for our nation," pledging support for victims' families and stronger protections against hatred and violence. Flags will be flown at half-mast in honour of those killed.

As the community mourns, shockwaves are being felt around the world. Religious leaders, local officials, and foreign governments have issued statements of solidarity, while vigils and memorials are being planned in Sydney and abroad. Investigations into the motivations and background of the shooters continue, as authorities work to bring justice and prevent future tragedies.
