Alongside these documents, users will also be able to store proof of benefits, helping to make government services more accessible. This digital wallet is expected to be rolled out gradually, with many government services offered digitally alongside traditional paper or card formats by 2027.

The Humphrey suite is designed to assist in tasks such as summarizing public consultation responses, which have previously required costly external consultants.


Tim Flagg, the Chief Operating Officer of the trade body UKAI, expressed support for the initiative but raised concerns about the use of the "Humphrey" name, suggesting it could potentially undermine the government's mission to make the technology more approachable and empowering for the public.

One of the main objectives of this digital overhaul is to increase efficiency within government departments and reduce costs. The introduction of AI tools is expected to save the taxpayer substantial amounts by reducing the need for expensive external consultants, who typically charge around £100,000 each time they are hired to manage data analysis tasks. The gov.uk digital wallet and the use of AI technologies are part of the government's broader effort to save £45bn in public spending over the coming years.
