University of Washington basketball player Justin Hardy died aged 22 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

University of St. Lewis in Washington mourned the passing of basketball player Justin Hardy on Sunday. she is 22 years old.

"After 13 months of boldly redefining what it means to live with cancer, Justin passed away peacefully this morning, Sunday, May 29," his father, Bob Hardy, said on Twitter.

Hardy was analyzed with stage 4 stomach cancer in April 2021 and underwent treatment while playing on the school basketball team. Hardy also graduated early from college with a double major while undergoing treatment, according to a statement from his family shared on the GoFundMe page. In addition, the University of Washington forward, the team's second top scorer, was the subject of an episode of ESPN's SportsCenter that launched in March.

College GameDay also featured Hardy's inspirational story earlier this year. Hardy talks about his love for sports against the backdrop of his health struggles.

He said, "This is me, living my life regardless of the possibilities. If this isn't a victory, I don't know what it is."

After his death, Hardy's family asked those who wished to honor him to donate flowers to the #HardyStrong GoFundMe.

"The accounts will be used for medical and commemorative expenses, which will go towards the HardyStrong Scholarship Fund, a high school graduate who competed in collegiate athletics and shares Justin's talent, determination, and overall achievements," said.
