DWD Warning Arctic Blast Makes Christmas 2025 Historically Cold
As the holiday season reaches its peak on this Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Germany is bracing for a historic weather event. Meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) have confirmed that 2025 is set to be the coldest Christmas in 15 years. While the dream of a deep snow "White Christmas" remains a regional luxury, the sheer intensity of the freezing temperatures is making headlines across Europe
A Historic Cold Snap Returns
The last time Germany faced such a frigid holiday season was in 2010, when the national average temperature plummeted to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius. This year, the weather patterns are mirroring that historic winter. A massive high pressure system over Scandinavia has effectively opened the gates for arctic continental air to stream in from the northeast. This "cold air whip" has brought an end to the series of mild, rainy Decembers that have dominated the last decade, replacing them with biting winds and double-digit negative temperatures.
Permafrost and Sun: The Holiday Outlook
Across much of the country, residents are experiencing Dauerfrost (permafrost), where temperatures remain below zero even during the day. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, nighttime lows in many regions particularly in the East and South are expected to drop between minus 7 and minus 12 degrees Celsius. In some wind exposed areas, the wind chill factor is making it feel as cold as minus 15 degrees.
Despite the record breaking cold, the sky remains surprisingly clear in many areas. For the northern half of Germany, the holiday is characterized by brilliant winter sunshine, making it perfect for walks provided you are wearing several layers of thermal clothing.
Regional Snow and Travel Warnings
While the air is too dry for a nationwide blanket of snow, the south of Germany, especially south of the Danube and the Alpine regions, is seeing some light snowfall. Travelers are being warned of black ice (Glatteis) and hoarfrost on the roads. Major transit hubs, including airports and train stations, are on high alert as the extreme cold tests the limits of the infrastructure. Whether you are in a snow covered village in the Alps or a frost covered city like Berlin, 2025 will be remembered as the year Christmas truly froze over.
