Weihnachtswetter 2025 Warum uns das kaelteste Fest seit 2010 bevorsteht

The holiday season of 2025 has brought a historic weather shift that is currently making headlines across Europe. For the first time in 15 years, Germany is experiencing a Christmas period with extreme frost and sub zero temperatures that remind many of the legendary winter of 2010. While the previous decade was mostly characterized by the so called Christmas Thaw with mild rain and temperatures reaching up to 10 degrees Celsius, this year is different. A powerful high pressure system over Scandinavia and a cold air mass from Siberia have combined to create a blocking situation, funneling icy polar air directly into Central Europe.

According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the national average temperature for the three day holiday period from December 24th to 26th is projected to be between $-2$ and $-3$ degrees Celsius. This is a significant deviation from the warm trends of recent years. In comparison, the last truly cold Christmas in 2010 saw a national average of $-5.2$ degrees Celsius. This year, many regions are experiencing ice days, where the thermometer does not cross the freezing point even at noon. In eastern and southern parts of Germany, nighttime temperatures are expected to drop as low as $-12$ degrees Celsius, while open areas could see even lower values due to the clear sky effect.

Despite the extreme cold, the holiday landscape remains largely green in the lowlands. The air mass arriving from the east is exceptionally dry, meaning that while it is freezing, the necessary moisture for heavy snowfall is missing. Meteorologists refer to this phenomenon as Kahlfrost or bald frost. Only the Alps and higher elevations of the central mountains can expect a scenic white layer. However, the windchill factor is the real concern this year. Brisk winds from the northeast make the $-5$ degree air feel like $-15$ degrees on the skin, posing a risk for those taking extended holiday walks. As we celebrate under these rare conditions, the 2025 Christmas season will certainly be remembered as the frostiest of a generation.
