Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign may not be over.
That's the takeaway from a memo obtained by news from top Sanders aide Faiz Shakir.
"In the event of an open Democratic presidential primary in 2024, Sen. Sanders has not ruled out another run for president, so we recommend that you answer any questions about 2024 with that in mind," Shakir wrote.
That's intriguing! For a variety of reasons.
Yes, it's interesting that Sanders, who is 80 years old, hasn't given up hope of becoming President at least not entirely. But it's also worth noting what it says about President Joe Biden's future or, at the very least, what Sanders' team thinks about it.
Which, once again, is intriguing! Especially since Biden (and those around him) have repeatedly stated that he intends to run again in two years. "I'd be fortunate if I had that same man running against me in the next election," Biden said last month, referring to Donald Trump.
When asked late last year, amid a flurry of rumors about Biden's plans, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, "That's his intention."
Of course, this is not a guarantee! I intend to work out later today. But that doesn't mean it will happen.
Biden, now 79, is the oldest person to be elected to the first term as President. And Sanders' move comes just days after another liberal senator, Elizabeth Warren, wrote in the New York Times, "Despite pandemic relief, infrastructure investments, and the historic Supreme Court confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson, we promised more -, and voters remember those promises."
