Back off, feta pasta. Dirty soda is a new delicious trend that's wowing TikTok.
In December, pop star Olivia Rodrigo posted a photo to Instagram at her show holding a glass from Swag, a coke shop specializing in making dirty sodas.
Since then, the unconventional drink, consisting of soda mixed with cream or half and half, flavored syrup, and lime juice, has exploded on social media, and Eater credits Rodrigo with at least partially popularizing it. According to Eater, the hashtag #dirtysoda has been used more than 700,000 times on TikTok.
The first two seasons of Rodrigo's breakthrough show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, were filmed in Utah, where soft drinks have been popular since the 2010s. According to Vice, they have become a mainstay of the state's cocktail style, likely because Utah has a large Mormon population who usually doesn't drink alcohol and instead enjoys this sweet, sugary drink.
Since then, tastes have evolved from an early obsession with dirty fizzy drinks. The shop Rodrigo visited had an extensive list of delightful menu items, including Naughty & Nice, a mix of Dr. Pepper, English toffee, and a half, plus fruit flavors like Beach Babe that blend Mountain Dew raspberry, peach, and vanilla cream.
Using all the ingredients I could find in PEOPLE's office, I decided to test the popular soda on TikTok. First, I filled the glass almost to the brim with lots of ice. I drive a classic diet car mixed with lots of vanilla cream. After a few sips, I decided the dirty soda was worth the noise. Fizzy Diet Coke pairs perfectly with smooth custard to create an almost old-fashioned cream soda and root beer floating in a glass. Of course, the amount of ice cream matters, too, so don't skimp. (Bonus points if you use silica as the pros do.)
