Robert Hudson, 'Rocky,' Reflects on His Remarkable Career Delivering Christmas Cheer and Memories

UK's Longest-Serving Postman Retires After 60 Years of Service

Robert Hudson, known fondly as "Rocky," is retiring after an extraordinary 60-year career as a postman for Royal Mail, making him the UK's longest-serving postman. At 76 years old, Rocky began his career in December 1964 at the young age of 16, working as a messenger at the Whitechapel Delivery Office in London. He spent the last four decades at the Docklands Delivery Office, where he became a beloved figure for both his work ethic and his festive spirit during the holiday season.

As he prepares for his final shift on 28 December 2024, Rocky looks back with fondness on the countless memories he's made delivering not just letters but also holiday cheer to London's residents. His record-breaking career has seen him deliver everything from turkeys and kippers to last-minute Christmas gifts, all while building a reputation as a dedicated and hardworking member of the Royal Mail team.

A Storied Career with Royal Mail

Rocky's journey began in an era when postmen would hand-deliver parcels wrapped in cloth or brown paper, with some deliveries even including festive turkeys. These perishable goods, often wrapped with a leg sticking out, were part of the unique challenges of Christmas deliveries during the 1960s. Rocky fondly recalls how he would brighten families' holidays by delivering these special parcels, watching their faces light up in joy.

"People used to say, 'here comes Father Christmas,'" said Rocky. "The look on the kids' faces when you arrived with their presents was so special. It was always a wonderful feeling."

Despite the physical demands of his job, especially during the busy Christmas period, Rocky always maintained a positive outlook, pushing through the intense work and making sure nothing was left behind.

Family, Tragedy, and Career Shifts

After spending a decade delivering door-to-door, Rocky's life took a significant turn in 1980 when his wife, Sheila, tragically passed away at the age of 26. Left to care for their three young children, Rocky transitioned to night shifts at the Docklands Delivery Office. This adjustment allowed him to balance his work life with the needs of his family, spending his days with his children and working through the night.

"I had little kids to bring up on my own, and the night shift was the only way I could manage it," Rocky explained. "It worked out absolutely perfect-I could be there to tuck them in and still get to work on time."

For the past 40 years, Rocky has worked tirelessly from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, emptying and organizing the delivery trucks to ensure smooth operations at the office. He recalls the challenges of handling the festive surge of packages, especially during Christmas, when the office would be incredibly busy. Despite these challenges, he always managed to keep his delivery office running smoothly, earning the admiration of his colleagues.

A Farewell and New Beginnings

As Rocky prepares for his retirement, he is looking forward to turning off his alarm clocks and spending more time at home. "The first thing I'm going to do is turn all my alarms off," he said with a smile. "I'll finish building my shed down the garden and do some maintenance things."

In recognition of his incredible 60-year service, Rocky and his colleagues celebrated his retirement at a special party at the Docklands Delivery Office on 7 December, marking the anniversary of his first day with Royal Mail. The celebrations were attended by friends, family, and fellow postal workers, who praised Rocky for his unwavering dedication to his job and his community.

During his career, Rocky met notable figures, including King Charles, when he reached his 50-year service milestone with Royal Mail. His legacy, however, lies not in the accolades he received, but in the joy he brought to the many lives he touched during his decades of service.

A Legacy of Service and Community

Rocky's retirement marks the end of an era for Royal Mail, and his story is a reminder of the vital role postmen and women play in our communities. His career is one of exceptional commitment and service, and though he will no longer be on his usual delivery route, his impact will be felt for years to come.

As Rocky embarks on this new chapter of his life, he leaves behind a career full of memories, festive moments, and a deep sense of pride in the work he has done. Though his early mornings and late nights are over, he is ready to enjoy his well-deserved rest-spending time with his family and tending to his garden.
